Diabetes impairs but does not halt sex among older adults, survey finds

Diabetes impairs but does not halt sex among older adults, survey finds
Many middle-aged and older adults with diabetes are sexually active, according to a new survey. Seventy percent of partnered men with diabetes and 62 percent of partnered women with diabetes engaged in sexual activity two or three times a month, comparable to those without diabetes. The disease takes a toll, however, on the desire for and rewards of sexual activity.

Jerry, the Bear with Diabetes

The 2009 DiabetesMine™ Design Challenge Entry Northwestern University Design for America designforamerica.pbwiki.com JERRY, THE BEAR WITH DIABETES Need Diabetes is a hard disease to cope with. Especially if you are a child, and have no idea why this is happening to you. As designers in Northwestern University, we believe that the early experiences in life are critical and play a huge role in the character. This is the reason why we have designed Jerry, the Bear with Diabetes. Jerry will answer two dilemmas children face living with diabetes. Guilt and invasion of personal space. No one really knows why children are diagnosed with diabetes. Given this fact, there is an unbearable feeling of guilt, a Why me? feeling. Although approximately 8% of the US population is diagnosed with diabetes, there is still a sensation of loneliness and separation from their age group inside children. The other factor is the invasion of personal space between ages 4-11. We have observed that it is acceptable, from a childrens standpoint, to be dressed or taken care of until a certain age. It is very disruptive that the parents constantly invade childrens area by insulin injections and glucose checks. Imagine this scenario: Mike, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a month ago, starts crying after his finger is pricked by his mom, who was just trying to help his son. How does he feel? How does his mother feel at this point? Our innovation is targeted to overcome these two feelings. It will help

Diabetes prevention and testing

As seen on The Doctors There are over 57 million Americans at risk for pre-diabetes, which can lead to type 2 diabetes. Pre-diabetics suffer from high blood sugar levels, but the amount of glucose is not severe enough to be considered diabetes. Symptoms can be very subtle for pre-diabetes, which is why it often goes undetected and untreated. Type 1 diabetes, which is also called juvenile diabetes because it often occurs in childhood, is a result of the pancreas being damaged and rendered unable to produce insulin needed to process sugar. Symptoms of type 1 diabetes can include: • frequent urination • excessive thirst • unusual or unexpected weight loss Type 2 diabetes develops over time, more often in adulthood, and also results in sugar not being processed in the body. Though the body is still producing insulin, it is less responsive to the effects of the insulin, which leads to higher blood glucose levels. Symptoms of type 2 diabetes include: • frequent infections • tingling or numbness in the hands and feet • unusual blurred vision Screenings are important for early detection and even prevention in the case of pre-diabetes patients. MinuteClinic offers blood glucose screenings that provide results in only a few minutes during your visit. Adults 45 and older should be screened every three years, unless they are at an increased risk for diabetes due to obesity or having a diabetic family member. In this case, they would require more frequent screenings. Featuring
